Working to become a Dementia Friendly business

As a High Street firm of solicitors serving the whole of the Poole Bournemouth conurbation my firm aims to provide the whole community with whatever legal advice support and assistance it may need. Given that there are estimated to be at least 5000 people living in Poole and Bournemouth with Dementia of varying types, they, their loved ones and their families are all likely to need legal services. Indeed it is believed that two thirds of these people are still living in the community. So for my firm it was an absolute no brainer to ensure that all of our reception team (as well as all staff in our specialist Wills and Probate department) at our 5 offices received training via the Alzheimer’s Society to become Dementia Friends a couple of years ago.

The free training session provided only took a couple of hours and gave all of us some insight into the extent of the challenges of living with dementia and for the carers of people with dementia, and hopefully has enabled our team to strive to meet the needs of all of our clients more effectively.

Nationally businesses such as the big supermarkets, M & S, Retail Banks and Boots are all also working to build dementia-friendly communities. Indeed it is estimated that 1million people nationally will have dementia by 2021 so our local business community needs to get on board to anticipate this growing need.

As a member of the Executive Group of the Broadstone Chamber of Trade I have met with several local business people with various types of businesses who have also undertaken the training and found it informative and of practical use.

It is intended that in time Peter Jones RMA MA FRSA [a Dementia Champion and registered psychotherapist] and myself will contact each of the Chamber’s members offering this free training as representatives of Broadstone Stepping Stones, a group chaired by Dame Annette Brooke striving to grow a Dementia Friendly Community in Broadstone.
However even if you are not presently a member of the Chamber please contact either Peter [07856 579750] or myself if you want to arrange for your teams to attend training to become Dementia Friends or have any questions.
